According a recent study, regional anesthesia outperforms general anesthesia.

According a recent study, adult patients are choosing regional over general anesthesia due to a variance in mortality rates.

It has been found that patients have a preference of regional over general anesthesia according to a study from Vanderbilt University Medical Center. This preference among patients receiving elective surgery was directly linked with the statistics associated with lower odds for 30-day mortality and complications.

In the study, patients that chose regional over general anesthesia had a mortality rate of 0.81 percent, which is lower than the 1.13 percent of adults receiving general anesthesia.  “It’s a small percentage difference,” said lead author Nahel Saied, MB BCh. “But over large numbers of patients, it adds up.”
