Eligible professionals (EPs) can forget about the previous March 15, 2016 deadline for filing a Medicare EHR Incentive Program hardship application and mark July 1, 2016 on their calendars.

On February 26, 2016, CMS announced that it is extending the Medicare Electronic Health Records, EHR hardship exception application deadline, so EPs have sufficient time to submit their applications to avoid the 2017 negative payment adjustment to their Medicare payments.

The Medicare EHR Incentive Program implemented by CMS includes several meaningful-use requirements EPs, hospitals and critical-access hospitals must meet to attest to being meaningful users of an EHR.  At the same time, CMS recognizes multiple reasons a hardship exception may be applicable.  Some of those reasons include natural disasters and insufficient internet connectivity.

EPs that would like to file for a hardship exception can access the new streamlined application process forms and instructions on the CMS website.
