Anesthesiology was long thought of as a specialty limited to the operating room. But a revolution is underway as the industrywide push to provide higher quality care at lower costs forces anesthesia providers to expand their role. As a result of this shift, anesthesia providers are becoming more involved in what happens outside of the operating room. Advanced anesthesiologists and CRNAs are improving care quality throughout the span of care for a patient.

Anesthesia providers are turning to data to improve patient safety, which can also help a hospitals’ bottom line. Today, 370 anesthesia groups, representing 2,600 hospitals and surgery centers, participate in Anesthesia Quality Institute reporting. AQI began collecting data in 2009 from electronic health records in practices and billing systems. This format allows practices access to this information at any time to compare their performance at various levels.
